"The nature of astrology is to be archetypally predictive, not concretely predictive."
~ Richard Tarnas
New Moon in CancerJuly 2, 200811 degrees 32 minutesNew Moons are times of new beginnings, planting new seeds and of setting intentions. This New Moon has the Sun, Moon and Venus in security oriented Cancer. We are all familiar with the sign Cancer associated with the Crab, however, the meaning of the sign Cancer partiality derives from the Bear. Directly below the constellation of the Crab is the Great Bear constellation Ursa Major. The mothering, home body principles assigned to Cancer comes from the Bear. The Bear is about nesting, comfort, safety, protective, nurturing and loves to eat. The oldest mythologies come from animals in the sky and this myth is at least 60,000 years old. In fact, before 60,000 years ago Bears had tails. Stories from Japan,Tibet, India and Russia are reaffirm this ancient theme. My premise is that many of the attributes of the signs in the zodiac come from smaller star groups or constellations that are around or near the major sign constellations. Frankly, I feel the Bear fits Cancers much better than the Crab from an archetypal perspective, don't you? Cancer is associated with the home, family, caretaking and mothering instinct. Since Cancer is ruled by the Moon (emotions) it is not uncommon for those who have Cancer, the Moon or the 4th house strongly activated in their charts are susceptible to Lunar Burnout. This is a form of a breakdown that happens when you're called on to nurture others too much, for too long and you're not doing enough to nurture or care for yourself. It's both an emotional crisis and a crisis in dependency relationships, where you simply can't go on giving to others because you are so emotionally drained yourself. Lunar burnout often happens to mothers and other caretakers, people who nurture others for a living, like teachers and those involved in the helping, healing or caretaking professions. The lesson is to learn how to nurture your self without the feeling guilty. Learn to attend to your own internal needs and to stop subordinating your own essential needs for the needs of others. People who suppress or refuse to honor their own needs often are those who wind up emotionally burned out (Moon). Cancer's never know when to cut the cord and stop trying to nurture the world. This is one of the best New Moons to work on home improvements or repairs. Or to simply enhance our home life by spending quality time with those we love. Because Cancer is the sign of the home and family one thing is certain. Unless you have a home that heals your spirit, you will never heal. To thy self, be true ! Family issues can come into play how we deal with our personal myths. In myth there is a story called the bed of Procrustes. When travellers were going to Athens and were waylaid by the bandit Procrustes, they were put on his bed, and if they were too tall for the bed they were cut down to size. If they were too short they were stretched to fit. Sometimes we do that to ourselves,if our family or culture doesn't approve of the divinities which are strong in us. If these divinities are not popular with our family or culture,we cut off parts of ourselves to win their love and approval. Even if you succeed at what your doing you probably won't fell good about it, because it is not who you really are. There's a Sufi saying that goes: "Failure of the body is more acceptable than failure of the soul". Recently I read something quite interesting and that is, What to do with someone you love who is having problems ? They say don't mother them nurse them. This is from Nora Hall's book the Moon and the Virgin. If you are in love with somebody and try to mother them, you become emotionally hooked into their problems. If you nurse them which is more of a Virgo (earth) thing, you help give them the tools to work with their problems on an earth (practical) level. Cancer's can at time become almost overly attached or involved with nurturing others. If you can't take care of yourself and nurture yourself properly, then you can't nourish or take care of others properly. Emotional malnutrition really sucks, eh ? The Sabian Symbol for 12 degrees of Cancer reads: A Chinese woman nursing a baby whose aura reveals him to be the reincarnation of a great teacher. This is a symbol of Revelation. This New Moon is the third "Crisis New Moon occurring in 2008. This is when the Moon is near perigee (closest to earth) emotions and domestic issues become even more intensified especially with the Moon in it's own sign, Cancer. Uranus turned retrograde on June 26th, for a five month period . What we need to review is what does freedom mean to us ? True freedom and liberation is an internal process. Uranus often brings sudden or unexpected changes, especially if we've been stuck in a rut or continue to run old patterns in our life that are no longer working in our lives. The upside is Uranus is one of the best tools to free us and liberate from old conditioning. Sometimes we do have to breakdown before we can breakthrough. Because Uranus in the higher octave of Mercury there will be lots of nervous energy, restlessness or over excitability. Uranus energy is often impulsive and spontaneous so it's important not to throw the baby out with the bath water. Uranus can bring new discoveries and breakthroughs into our lives. Uranus is called the "awakener" for he helps to awaken us out of our spiritual amnesia . As Uranus made it's station on the 26th we had the biggest drop in the stock market since 2006.The Supreme court reversed itself and upheld the second amendment the right to bear arms for individuals. This November, in fact the very day of the Presidential election Uranus ( new, progressive) make it's first opposition to Saturn (old, conservative)what a powerful metaphor this is, eh ? Jupiter also sextiles Uranus briefly in November. Historically, Jupiter/Uranus cycles seem to correspond with times of liberal, progressive empowerment, whereas, Saturn/Pluto cycles (2001-2020) correlate with times of conservative and repressive empowerment. The new cycle of Uranus conjunct Jupiter (new seed) will take place on November of 2010 in the sign of Pisces. What this could imply is I hope Obama and his supporters don't get to over confident (Jupiter) and assume this election will be a slam dunk! There are several mundane astrologers picking John McSame, oops, I mean John McCain to win the national election despite what the current polls are indicating. I'm glad to say I'm not one who shares that opinion. Neptune, symbolizing imagination, dreams, illusions made it's station the end of May at 25 degrees of Aquarius. The Sabian Symbol reads: A butterfly with the right wing more perfectly formed. Keynote : A transmutation of emotional energies. Neptune is about the urge to merge with something larger than ourselves. The yearning for an accepting womb. Neptune is associated with the dreamtime from the Australian Aboriginals. Spiritual nourishment is derived from the dreamtime itself. The urge to merge with the spirit world where faith and intuitions will guide us to feel our way through the dark. We may bath and purify ourselves from the healing waters of Neptune through prayer, magic, music and dance. The Elders remind us that the four healing salves of life are singing, dancing, drumming and storytelling. That's good healing medicine !
