"The nature of astrology is to be archetypally predictive, not concretely predictive."

New Moon in Gemini
June 14, 2007

New Moons are times for planting new seeds, new beginnings and setting intentions. Since the Moon is what nurtures or feeds us, the New Moon in Gemini nourishes us through indulging ourselves with reading, writing, communication and learning new information. Gemini is the sign of the twins Castor and Pollux, the sons of Zeus who were hatched from an egg laid by Leda after she mated with Zeus disguised as a Swan. This serves as an excellent metaphor for Gemini's propensity for flight and movement. This is due to the restless, roaming nature of the mind always exploring new and uncharted areas. Gemini's ruler is Mercury/Hermes, messenger of the gods. He is also the god of speech and the guide of souls to the underworld. Mercury/Hermes is the only god who is able to travel between both worlds, the upper world and the underworld. He also guided both Persephone and Eurydice back into the world of light, the upper world. Geminis often feel they travel between two worlds.

Mercury/Hermes always carries a healing rod, the caduceus, with him that reminds us of the healing or wounding power of our words. The degree for this New Moon is 24 degrees of Gemini. According to Zodiacal Symbology by Isidore Kozminsky, this degree reads "A beautiful woman giving bread to a crowd of starving people. From behind her, is the mythic crown bathed in holy light on her head." This is a symbol of charity and glory.

Pluto in opposition to the New Moon asks us to release and let go of old emotional attachments or baggage that no longer serves our soul's growth. Transform your power urges into power surges. Mercury goes retrograde on the 15th at 12 degrees of Cancer and the energy shifts from the head to the heart (gut) Cancer . The true mind is in the heart! Learn to trust your intuition (gut) and go with the flow. Uranus is also approaching retrograde on June 23 at 19 degrees of Pisces . This degree reads " A sick Man lying at the base of a large stone cross". Denotes one of great faith, and faith can truly move mountains. It is a symbol of believing. Watch for new breakthroughs and discoveries with our spiritual heritage. A leap of faith may be required?

Uranus the "Awakener" helps to awaken us out of our spiritual amnesia and pierce the veil of illusion, become more compassionate and embrace our divinity.

Neptune makes it's final opposition to Saturn on June 25 at 22 degrees of Leo/Aquarius. This symbolizes do our dreams and aspirations become a reality, or, is the dream (nightmare?)finally over ? Neptune will also help to dissolve or erode old habits or beliefs that been inhibiting our quest for spirit in our lives . Neptune has a lot to do with ritual, ceremony and intention. The invisible world (Neptune) would like to help but spiritual edict requires we ask first. Only then do the gods / goddess know when we're asking for help. Neptune yearns for the ideal, for beauty. When we make something beautiful, invisible magic comes to live there.

Finally, one of my favorite stories in myth that relates to Gemini/Mercury is the baby Aries was kidnapped by two giants who put him into a brazen jar where he was imprisoned for 13 months. Just as he was about to give up all hope, Mercury/Hermes came to rescue him. This is a wonderful image that suggests we need to express and communicate (Mercury) our feelings/anger (Mars) in order to free ourselves from the chains that imprison us. It drives me crazy that much of New Age thinking always wants to transcend any kind of negative emotion. They never allow for the heat to come in. Anger is a valid expression of emotion as long as it's not over the top, expressed cleanly and not displaced. In the words of Robert Bly, "there are harsh enemies inside of us that cannot be cured with brown rice." A powerful message for Gemini which is written by Paul Tillich is " The first duty of love is to listen."
